The Insulin Dependent Diabetes Trust - International

AIMS AND ACTIVITIES of IDDT - India

  • Insulin Dependent Diabetes Trust- India is committed to ensuring that people with Diabetes have an informed choice of treatment including a choice of the type of insulin that suits them.
  • We also offer help and support on a one-to-one basis through our up-to-date web site and quarterly IDDT Newsletter.
  • IDDT-India is committed to ensuring that there is continued availability of beef and pork insulin's so that people with Diabetes can obtain the insulin they need to maintain the best possible diabetic control and a good quality of life.
  • Continuous availability of natural animal insulin products as at least an equal alternative to genetically engineered human insulin or analogue products.
  • IDDT- India for the exchange of critical informations and observations in the field of diabetes and for people with diabetes and their families, carers
  • Safe, efficacious and economic diabetes medicines and tools
  • Deregulation of the cartel-like insulin market that promotes purely human insulin products and drives out the insulin obtained from animal sources
  • IDDT – India is not going to fight against the production of gene-technological medicaments or the use of human insulin, but will do what it can to prevent the disappearance of animal insulins and their accompanying technology, because:
    1. These are essential for the well-being and safety of a substantial minority of diabetes sufferers.
    2. Animal insulin products may be a safe and affordable alternative, where the availability of this essential drug still depends on the price.
  • Through freedom-of-information requests, obtain reports of adverse drug reactions linked to synthetic insulin and file with Healthcare authorities.
  • Launch a letter-writing campaign to Healthcare authorities in state and Central Govt.s.
  • IDDT - India demands that Health Care authorities in India to provide information to physicians about reported adverse drug reactions and an advisory about animal insulin treatments available to Type 1 and Type 2 diabetics who may be experiencing adverse reactions to synthetic insulin.
  • By taking support from animal insulin marketing companies to empower 1800 primary care physicians in India to give free Bovine insulin to 2 of their type 1 diabetics.
  • Organizing public lectures, debates, write-ups, posters, detection camps and distribution of leaflets on cost effective insulins throughout the country.
IDDT-International
The UK was not the only country where patients were reporting difficulties with ‘human’ insulin, patients in Switzerland also reported similar problems and a group formed there. However, IDDT started receiving complaints from people all over the world and they were encouraged to form patient groups within their own countries. We now have seven IDDT groups throughout the world in addition to which we have many individual members in numerous countries throughout the world.

In 1998 IDDT-International was formed to unite all these groups to try to fight this global withdrawal of natural animal insulins, especially now research [Cochrane Review July 2002] has clearly demonstrated that synthetic 'human' insulin is not superior to natural pork insulin.

As the large insulin manufacturers appear to make their commercial decisions globally, it is necessary that patients can also take global actions in the best interests of their own healthcare. Firstly, IDDT-International provides an information source to people with diabetes around the world to try to help people obtain the animal insulins they need. Secondly IDDT-International has brought together patient groups in different countries who provide information and support to people with diabetes and their family carers to ensure that they have an informed choice of insulin treatment. The advocacy groups are able to lobby their own government departments on the basis of evidence from patient experiences to try to ensure that this informed choice of treatment remains available.

Aims of IDDT- International
  • To offer care and support to people with diabetes and their families, especially to those experiencing difficulties with ‘human’ insulin.
  • To ensure that all patients and their family carers are properly informed of the various treatments available to them and are made aware of the risks and benefits.
  • To influence appropriate bodies to ensure that a wide range of insulins remain available to ensure that all insulin users have a continued supply of their chosen insulin.
  • To represent the direct voice of people that live with diabetes in relation to healthcare and research.
